Music Salvage

First of all, last April, I saw a guy at San Diego's Roots Festival playing a Dobro-like slide guitar made out of an old gas can. It was actually a fine instrument, it played well and sounded great. It had a hub cap for a resonator. I spoke to the owner, Myron Meyer. It was not something he had made himself in his garage, but he had actually paid 1,500 dollars for it at McCabes Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. I was in Santa Monica earlier this month, and I visited McCabe's. They had another one in stock, but this one was blue instead of red, and the resonator was a metal serving dish in the shape of a seashell, rather than a hubcap. So there must be somebody out there that keeps them supplied with these instruments. I would think the price was outrageous had I not heard how it sounded- the ultimate metal resonator guitar sound!

Secondly, I visited my old friend Robert Jones in Baldwin Park. He plays guitar for the band Desperation Squad. While walking to the store through an alley in his neighborhood he found a guitar that was literally smashed to pieces laying on top of a pile of trash. He took it home and showed it to another friend of his who works in a woodshop in nearby Irwindale. That guy was able to fix it! It plays fine now, stays in tune and everything, and sounds good! It just needed a little special attention and a few wood screws.

I've added pictures to the album- one of Myron Meyer with his gas can resonator guitar, one of Robert playing the salvaged guitar, and one close-up showing some of the repairs that were made.

i love it! one of my favorite bands is Neptune www.neptuneband.com/
they play on instruments they fashioned themselves from scrap in junkyards. the music is 'noise rock' so it's not for everyone. either people love it or hate it. personally, i love it & watching them play in incredible!

one of my great heroes, the composer (etc.) Harry Partch, built his own instruments (quite often from discarded scrap) capable of playing microtones...quartertones and so on. here:

      www.harrypartch.com

click "musical instruments" on the menu. i LOVE these descriptions, and his music is wonderfull! :)

and on this next website, you can see what his instruments look like and sample what they sound like:

notice that Harry intended his creations to be visually beautifull, sculptural objects as well as to sound great. this dude was amazing and inspiring!

By coincidence, when I stopped in to visit Robert and took these photos I was en route to downtown Los Angeles to see the Partch Ensemble perform as part of "Microfest"! It was July 20th.

Wait a minute! I thought I was in Finders and Scavengers... is this the Synchronicities thread in Talkfest??!??

Should I post photos of them (Partch Ensemble)?

There- I put a couple of pictures up. You get a good look at the instruments in the first picture. They aren't Partch's original instruments, but faithful replicas.

A guitarist named John Schneider (not the guy from Dukes of Hazard!) put this group together. Here's more about him:
