A man was out walking in the desert when a voice said to him, "Pick up some pebbles and put them in your pocket, and tomorrow you will be both happy and sad."
The man obeyed. He stooped down and picked up a handful of pebbles and put them in his pocket. The next morning he reached into his pocket and found diamonds and rubies and emeralds. And he was both happy and sad. Happy he had taken some - sad that he hadn't taken more.
And so it is with education.

ok. that's odd.

Re: Parable of the Pebbles....
Wed, September 14, 2005 - 11:30 AMReminds me of a crow’s nest I found as a kid. Full of odd bits including pebbles. I felt that to the crow, they must all have been precious gems. Actually, this tribe reminds me of that nest. : ) -

Re: Parable of the Pebbles....
Wed, September 14, 2005 - 3:59 PMWow, that's cool - I've never seen a crow's nest. There are a bunch of nests on our street, but they nest really high up in the tall pines.
I think a crow found (and took) my marbles...I had three in a old wok filled with sand that was in my garden.
Crows are related to magpies, which are notorious for finding things, so perhaps. -

They fill their nests with all sorts of colorful Baroque items and marbles would certainly be fair game (erg) for them. I distinctly remember a small bunch of bottle caps in the nest, which amazed me not so much for what they were, but that they were put into a pile. Birds of a feather gathering together, hey we resemble that remark! -

Re: Parable of the Pebbles....
Thu, September 15, 2005 - 6:03 PMBluejays are known for raiding squirrel feeders that have peanuts in them, taking all the peanuts, and hiding them all over town.
I find peanuts tucked into weird places around my yard - like a hole in the wall where the tv cable used to go, in a bike tire that was hanging on a wall, etc.
At first I wondered if it was some sort of voodoo...

Re: Parable of the Pebbles....
Tue, April 4, 2006 - 10:17 PMRavens have been known to take a twig or cinder from a fire and bring it to their nest up in a barn occationally. You can imagine what sometimes happens to these barns!
I think it was said they are the bird that had the traditional association with the pheonix, the fire bird, in some parts of old... Europ?e was it?
